Then it was back East. Going further south wasn’t even an option. The boys wanted out of California. But along the way they stopped at Joshua Tree Monument deep in the Mojave Desert. It was a revelation carved in dust and sand.

The desert is the great purifier. If God exists, the desert is his home. If peace can be found, the desert can be one’s salvation. Coyotes fought loudly in the night, waking the brothers. It’s in their rough voices that God’s indecipherable purposes may be finally understood.
