Punalu, Black Sand Beach

The black sands of Punalu come from lava as it cascades into the ocean hardening and then shattering. Later it is cast up on nearby shores and worked by wave action into glassy grains of inky blackness.

The sand is a volcanic novelty, but the beach here is as exquisite a beach as you are likely to find on the Big Island.
