Kilauea Crater

From wounds rent in the wounded side of Mauna Loa oozes the stuff of creation, liquid fire, Pele's glowing gift of blood to the islands. A series of craters pock the eastern slope of Mauna Loa, Kilauea being the largest and most violent in the last few centuries, and the source of current eruptions and flows.

As of the writing of this page (Feb 2001), lava from vents east of Kilauea is still pouring into the ocean.
