Kilauea Crater
Almost thirty years ago this area was once a beautiful beach and nearby lay a thriving
island community. But, a new series of eruptions soon ended the bliss of island living,
at least on this part of the Big Island. Now, sitting here crouched on rock less than
thirty years old and with a column of steam boiling up from the surging ocean mere miles
away, I can not help but consider the natural forces at work about me.
Fire boils water, water cools fire, a metaphor for the processes of living. This land will
change, life will adapt, and so again. Incontravertible and seemingly timeless is the
force of creation.
