We pick up the devastation trail as we reach the top of the western rim of Kilauea Iki.
The trail heads south and east through more native rainforest until we reach a zone of
literal devastation. The trail proceeds around the southern aspect of a large cinder cone,
another remnant of the Kilauea Iki eruption. The cone was formed as ash and pumice rained
down from the tremendous lava fountains that burst forth from the crater's vent. Here, Lisa
is pointing out how quickly we went from lush forest to this blasted area, where the
bleached trunks of long dead trees still stand nearly fifty years later.
