The trail leading back to our campsite at
Namakani Paio hugs the north rim of Kilauea
Crater. Along the way earthen vents pour out a steady stream of sulfurous steam.
Plants congregate around the openings drinking in the moisture and minerals that are carried
upward from the molten depths. The steam is visible from a great distance, a haze blanketing
the northern rim of the crater.
We head back, feet dragging, tongues swollen with thirst, skin crackling from a rough
burnishing by the sun, but not wanting for the chance to experience this strange and
wonderful place first hand. Thank you Pele.
